What are some examples of energy storage?
- Lithium-ion batteries are used in home backup systems and electric cars. They release the electricity stored from solar panels or the grid when required.
- Pumped hydro storage: In times of high demand, water can be pumped to a higher level using excess electricity, which can then be passed through turbines to generate electricity.
- Thermal storage: Molten water or salt are materials that store heat. This is generally employed in solar power plants to provide energy at dusk.
- Compressed air energy storage (CAES): Compressed air is stored underground and released to power turbines when power is required.
